Event Details

The Pacific seaborne thermal coal market has become one of the largest commodity trading markets over the past 30 years, propelled by the tremendous growth in East Asian economies, in particular China.  However estimating the demand profile into the future has become more challenging, and Mr. Stefan White's talk will explore the following questions:
  • What is the outlook of China's energy demand as the country transitions to an economy with greater focus on services and domestic consumption?
  • As and when China starts to address its high domestic levels of debt, what impact could this potentially have on energy demand and imported commodities?
  • To what extent do alternative energies, hydro, gas and nuclear power pose an existential threat to thermal coal?
  • What are the implications of increasing restrictions by Western banks and some large investment funds to invest in coal-related businesses?
  • What will be the potential impacts resulting from Government commitments to curtail carbon emissions?
  • Could China potentially become a materially significant exporter of thermal coal?
  • Is India likely to become a materially significant importer of thermal coal?
